Last week, an independent producer called Creator VC successfully raised funds for the "definitive FPS documentary." Simply called "FPS: First Person Shooter", this documentary wants to be nothing less than the "definitive celebration of the FPS genre". Once finished, it is supposed to last a minimum of three hours and tell the story of the genre from the 1970s to the present.
To this end, the producer has brought together a wide cast of veterans, including John Romero and Tom Hall (co-founders of Doom and Wolfenstein dev id Software and Deus Ex Ion Storm studio) Warren Spector (producer of System Shock, Deus Ex ) Marcus Lehto (co-creator of Halo), Randy Pitchford (co-creator of Gearbox Software) and many more. An exemption from liability is required here: PC editor-in-chief Evan Lahti will also be interviewed for this documentary.
The trailer above looks very promising and I dug it out after overcoming my initial confusion that appeared on a Retrowave Youtube channel; it turns out that the team will be responsible for the soundtrack. "This definitive documentary brings together the legends that created this genre, highlights the legacy of the most popular and significant FPS titles of the last 48 years, and offers fans the opportunity to participate in this iconic celebration," he says. the description.
It sounds ambitious, but the Kickstarter also includes a detailed breakdown of the topics the documentary seeks to address. From the technology that made advances in the FPS genre possible, to game mechanics such as free aim, regenerating health and killing stripes and FPS communities and the world of speedrunning, here are many things that seem super interesting.
Even though the Kickstarter campaign is over, it looks like you can still go back to the documentary Crowd of oxen—There are a large number of possible rewards to choose from and along with Kickstarter page, is also one of the best places to get more information about the project. The documentary will be released in December 2022.
