The next Battlefield game will take us to the distant future of "21 years from here", if the rumors of a potential Battlefield 2042 are true.
Filling the middle ground between the series' debut in 1942 and the mechanical war zones of 2142, the next battlefield is supposed to take us to the near future when it is announced later this week. This keeps track of the many, many leaks we’ve seen of the game so far, with images showing us some slightly futuristic cannons and war robots fighting over tropical beaches.
The namedrop comes thanks to Redditor quotes details shared by "some random guy who dropped you on the discord server (data analyzer Tom Henderson)". The leak suggests that by 2042 it will have the "largest maps in the history of Battlefield", made up of "Sectors", each measuring about the size of a Battlefield 3 map. These sectors contain several points and cannot be recovered once insured.
Teams will be able to catch a "professional" in the style of a hero per class, with an additional gadget or two to enhance their role (the post suggests a Medic with healing darts that can be cured remotely) . A revamped attachment system also gives you two slots to change input and output on the fly.
The leak also suggests that a beta will arrive later this month, following a private test session for large content creators and streamers. Of course, we won’t have to wait that long to find out if something’s right: EA plans to unveil the upcoming Battlefield game this Wednesday, June 9th.
Personally, I don’t think 20 years in the future is very far away. Add another century to that date, Dice, and stop giving us the Battlefield 2142 successor we deserve.
