Super Robot Wars has been a series of major tactical role-playing games in Japan for 30 years, since the release of the first game in 1991, and has since had more than 50 releases on various consoles and derivations. But you’ve probably never heard of it, because it’s never been officially located and published in most English-speaking worlds.
This is no longer the case, as after three decades the latest version of the series arrives on PC in the US and Europe via Steam: Super Robot Wars 30 will be released on October 27, 2021.
Super Robot Wars was never released in the West, at least according to its fans, because the game is a crossover series with giant robots from a wide range of Anime and Manga series. There are 22 different IP addresses in the upcoming Super Robot Wars 30. This makes it a hell of a license, as many of these shows have been licensed or adapted by various Western companies during the decades before and after the shooting of Super Robot Wars. Achieving the closure of all these companies, negotiating rights, sharing cash, one can only imagine how that nightmare could develop.
In recent years, Super Robot Wars has abandoned the Macross series, and some fans say it might just be the only thing holding it back. In the United States, at least, there is a notoriously contentious legacy surrounding Macross and his American reinterpretation Robotech. Perhaps this, combined with Bandai Namco’s recent positive experiences with the PC versions, was enough to locate it.
Despite the lack of official releases, the Super Robot Wars series has many English-speaking fans, and previous titles in the series garnered English releases in the Southeast Asian region. American and European fans of the game have had to import them in the past and have sometimes been forced to play them on closed consoles in the region, but it seems that those days are finally over.
Maybe by some miracle, you can find and pre-order Super Robot Wars 30 on Steam. There is even a full DLC schedule.
