Today, on the live broadcast of Guerrilla Collective, a bit of gameplay appeared for the upcoming metroidvania Akatori, which featured the game’s first boss. There is a copy of the trailer embedded above.
Regardless too deeply if I’m really looking forward to playing a new 2D platform game, I’m a fan of what Akatori looks like. The flat layers and color palette are what I associate with Neo Geo arcade games like Samurai Shodown and Metal Slug, which for me are the height of sprite-art (though obviously Akatori isn’t so pixat).
Akatori stars Mako, who has the ability to switch between parallel dimensions; it seems that modern scenes can be one of these dimensions, contrasted with the past. "Explore worlds full of magic and secrets, find friends and allies and try not to wake up the ancient God," demands the Steam page.
A bit unusually, Akatori appears on Steam with a TBA release date, but aside from this trailer, the latest news is that it is looking for more funding. The developers are will launch a Kickstarter campaign this summer.
