If mobility is critical to Apex Legends, having a bloody jetpack will allow you to overlook it. But with the new hero Valkyrie rising above the competition, Respawn has decided to reduce his rocket-powered backpack.
Today, live balance designer John Larson broke the news on Twitter. Look, the Valk jetpack has two modes: a direct flight mode and a “flying” one that consumes fuel at a rate of 10%. This allows it to stay in the air for much longer at the expense of mobility. In practice, this meant that many Valk players only cooled down in the clouds.
Valk's "tac hover" was designed to consume fuel at 10% of the normal fare. With the rise of ALGS, we thought we should remove this exception (we found that Valks often took coffee breaks over the final fight). live Thursday.May 25, 2021
Larson notes that Respawn thought he was good at the launch, responding to a comment that "we thought about it, but we didn't know for sure if it would manifest as a problem." The change now comes as Apex's Global Series Sports League really grows. With a $ 1 million prize pool on the line, the developer obviously doesn’t want the teams to get the win hovering out of range.
Respawn has been quite punctual with the new additions this season. Legacy’s new Bocek compound bow was canceled after dominating his first week, while this week saw Apex finally punish people for leaving Arenas halfway through the game.
I feel a little sad to hear that Respawn cools Valk’s rays to play competitively, honestly. But, as Emma found out too late, Titanfall 2 is right there if you want your Apex fights to take place at 100 mph.
