Sonic’s next big game may not be due until 2022. But in order to line up until then, the blue blur is tearing Minecraft apart in a 30th Anniversary DLC for the blocked sand of Mojang.
Now, this isn’t Minecraft’s first crossover, but Sonic may be one of the most ambitious. Where most of these packages include a themed world, Mojang has really tried to create an honest Sonic hedgehog game, crafting what sounds like a system for procedurally generating 3D Sonic maps: loop-de-loops and all.
There are rings and climbs to collect, speed boosts and bounce maps to launch yourself on the map, enemies to step on, and multiple biomes ranging from chemical plants to the iconic hills in the series (which certainly work great well with The Blocked Aspect of Minecraft).
That said, Sonic and Pals seem weird and cruel, everything Minecraft wanted like that. Of course, the artists have put a lot of effort into making this work work, but I’ll never get over your man’s cuboid spines. I couldn't hurt a fly with these things, no matter what an egg-shaped supervillain.
Disclosure: I previously worked as a level artist on these types of DLC packs for Minecraft console ports, some of which are now in Bedrock Edition.
