At the end of the Xbox and Bethesda E3 showcase, we had a wonderful surprise: Arkane Austin, the developers of Prey and Dishonored, are working on a new game that looks a lot like Left 4 Dead, but with vampires and a bit of Aesthetics of the 80s by Stranger Things.
We didn’t see the actual gameplay mode, but you can see the CG trailer above. The game is called Redfall, and before its revelation, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said it was a game that could be played alone or with a group of friends (like L4D). The trailer gives us a good idea of how it will play: in it, a group of four survivors meet in a ruined corner shop along with a cute dog-like robot. Not long after, we see them fight human groups using a wide range of magical abilities and weapons.
Very quickly, however, Arkane makes a turn for us as a group of vampires attack the group. Here, take a look at special weapons, such as a paddle weapon that can impale vampires from a distance and a special weapon that turns one into stone. Again, Left 4 Dead is an obvious influence, but it combines special abilities like you’d get in Overwatch, which is such an obvious combination that I can’t believe anyone has thought of it so far.
The Redfall ad a bethesda.net reveals more details: The game can be played alone or in squads of up to four players and includes a list of four unique heroes, each with their own personalities, abilities and motives to fight to protect the city of Redfall.
Dev is a famous paranormal internet researcher, amateur cryptozoologist and aspiring inventor. Armed with his own weapons, he has a mission to reveal the truth behind what is happening in Redfall. If he survives, he will have an endless story to tell and proof that he will back it all up.
Layla studied biomedical engineering at Redfall Technical University and did internships at the disastrous Aevum Therapeutics research facility, where something went very wrong. She says everything is a bit blurry. The last thing he remembers is waking up with a killer headache and wild telekinetic powers.
Remi de la Rosa
Remi De La Rosa is a combat engineer, and that’s brilliant. He has lived his life on the front lines of conflict, using his brilliant mind to protect his loved ones and help those in need around the world as part of an elite Navy rescue unit. Now, with the help of her cohort of robots, Bribón is determined to help save the Redfall survivors.
Jacob is an ex-military sniper, sent to Redfall just before the sun set as part of an elite private security force. Separated from his platoon, he now attacks the streets of Redfall, neutralizing the evil of the shadows with supernatural precision. The strange events of Redfall have left Jacob with a mysterious vampire eye and a ghostly crow that is never far from his shoulder.
Redfall vampires, on the other hand, are not undead, but they are the result of an experiment that has gone terribly wrong. No matter how bad they are, they continue to evolve and develop new abilities. The “Angler” seen in the trailer, for example, is just one of the types of vampires that will be present in the game. Nor are they the only threat players will face: Human cultists who venerate their new vampire lords have established outposts throughout the region and will have to clean up to make the area safer for survivors.
Of course, Arkane emphasized that the choice of players and a reactive world will be at the heart of Redfall. "Every game we play is a little different than the last," said co-creative director Ricardo Bare. "Dishonored presented the stealth. The dam took advantage of tons of physics-related play. Mooncrash introduced rogue-like elements. Despite these differences, in all cases our focus remains on building a deep world and in inventive game mechanics. The same will happen with Redfall ".
Journalist and comic writer Evan Narcisse, author of Rise of the Black Panther, tweeted that he also works on Redfall:
Working at @playRedfall with @ Harvey1966, @RicardoBare, @HazelMonforton and the whole @ArkaneStudios team has been a great experience. I can't wait for people to enter this world. https://t.co/srB7BmpvieJune 13, 2021
The movie ad is a bad trailer that exudes style, exactly what we would expect from Arkane, and we’re definitely looking forward to learning more. We should not wait too long to achieve this: the fall will come in the summer of 2022.
