Announced during IGN live broadcast today, Core Keeper is a cooperative adventure set in "an endless cavern of creatures, relics, and resources." The trailer instantly reminded me of Stardew Valley, if all of Stardew Valley was moved to its caves.
Hey, caves can be as cozy as farms and hamlets. You can even grow plants in Core Keeper, though I’m not sure how they go without sunlight. I guess the magic.
Not so cozy is Glurch the Abominous Mass, a giant spot that tries to jump to the adventure party at the end of the trailer. Anything described as “too much” is not good. (Except maybe the Mass Effect effect. But is interstellar travel good? Things don't really work for anyone in these games. I digress.)
Core Keeper admits up to eight players, and while its caves are described as endless, there is a kind of story: you and your friends intend to "unravel the mystery of the old core."
Part of this story will be included in the initial release of Core Keeper on Steam Early Access, along with three heads, 140 items, and essential systems such as combat, base building, agriculture, and cooking. It will be available later this year.
"We've been working on Core Keeper for almost a year now and we feel that the Early Access version is in a good time of development so players can start the adventure and start playing," says the developer, a Swedish studio called Pugstorm.
If all goes well, Core Keeper version 1.0 will be released before the end of 2022. You can learn more about the developer's plans at Core Keeper Steam page.
