Heroes of Might and Magic 2 is one of the best fantasy turn-based strategy games of all time, only overshadowed by its successor, the active modding scene has produced great HD mods and unofficial expansion packs. But Heroes 2 has hardly been abandoned: the continuum Fheroes2 Project, which started more than a year ago, is underway to offer the ultimate Heroes 2 experience.
Fheroes2 is a cross-platform open source recreation of the Might and Magic 2 game engine with a list of dream features, including improved AI, greater resolution support (and window resizing), faster drive delivery , hundreds of bug fixes and the most coveted of all features: an instant battle option to skip easy fights and a restart button to replay the battle manually if you’re not happy with the results. The videos also show the very polished animations, which makes me slow down and watch the tiny horses gallop across the map.
In short, the FHeroes2 engine retains the art, style and gameplay of the 1996 game, while adding features and enhancements that modern fans of the strategy have come to expect. Take note, Ubisoft. Multiplayer is still limited to hotseat, but there is a full online multiplayer support roadmap.
The engine is currently in version 0.9.3 and is in active development. The Fheroes2 team has recently launched a Patreó for support and to produce monthly updates and patches as the project approaches 1.0. So far there are only a few people involved, but there are no indications that work on the project is slowing down.
"The FHeroes2 project is evolving," the team said in a Patreon update in April. "Every month we spend a lot of time improving code quality. We add new gameplay elements. We fix hundreds of bugs. We recently added full project support to PlayStation Vita. In the future we will expand the range of devices to which you could run and enjoy Heroes of Might and Magic II! "
