We know (and well, I love) Henry Cavill as a PC player with a card and star of The Witcher on Netflix, but he’s also well known as a Warhammer fan. And I don't mean to say that I've played Total War: Warhammer 2, although it does play a lot – I mean, it is there. He also painted Warhammer miniatures and earlier this year sparked a meme-driven campaign to turn him into the Emperor of Humanity in a new HBO series. (Which, to remind you, doesn’t really exist, but considering how things have gone with Game of Thrones and The Witcher, it’s not the worst idea I’ve ever heard).
As Warhammer says, it’s pretty solid, and Cavill easily dispelled any doubts about it in an interview during last week’s WitcherCon. Of course, he was there to discuss all the Witcher stuff, but as the chat ended, his insides were fulfilled. Custodians with a section on a spider.
"There's something I'm dying to say," Cavill said. "I'm sorry, this is completely (only), every day on set, on that set, I was grinding my teeth because there was no one who knew the reference I'm about to give you."
"That lamp looks like a Blackstone fortress," he continued, pointing to the large Gothic fixture hanging from the ceiling. "I know no one on set would have made it, so I've been biting my tongue about it … I don't know if that's the inspiration, but that sounds like a Blackstone fortress."
First of all: a quick dive into the Warhammer tradition. Blackstone Fortress are massive warp-based ships and weapons of mass destruction, discovered during the 33rd millennium but not awakened until the Gothic war, when Abaddon the Despoiler discovered the secret to bringing all his abilities to life. Both the Empire of Man and the forces of Chaos have Blackstone Fortress in their hands, but it is believed that they were built during the War in heaven between the old and the necrons, which took place 60 million years before the 41st millennium.
Man, I love this Warhammer tradition.
Are they similar anyway? I have to say yes, they do:
