It took a while, but the Rift S is no longer available on the Oculus website, as it has disappeared without a direct successor to a dedicated PC VR headset. These assignments have been delivered in Quest 2, a standalone headset (hardware is integrated) that can also be connected to a PC.
It was really just a matter of time. Facebook announced in April this year that it would no longer ship Rift S units to retailers; once their sales ran out, that was for the Rift S.
"Rift S is still available for sale on some channels around the world, but as we announced last year, we plan to stop selling Rift S in 2021," Facebook said. UploadVR at the time. "In general, because the channels are sold out of stock, they will not be replaced."
A visit to the Wayback machine indicates that the Rift S was not available at the Oculus site at some point in May. Oculus still maintains one Rift S product page., but when visiting the "compare" section, only Quest 2 has a "Buy Now" button.
We have mixed feelings about it. In fact, the Quest 2 is the best VR headset for most people and, compared to the Rift S, it offers a higher resolution screen, faster update speed and more flexibility. However, Quest 2 requires a Facebook login.
This is a problem for some people, and it didn’t help that Facebook recently started testing ads on Oculus games. The audience was not well received: Resolution Games, the developer of the first game (Blaston) that included ads, left the show after a review of the bombing campaign that resulted from the game's ads.
Interestingly, Quest 2 had surpassed the Rift S in March as Steam's most popular handset. A look at the statistics now, however, shows that the Rift S is again superior, albeit by less than one full percentage point. However, from now on, the Rift S is the most used headset for PC VR games on Steam.
If you were expecting a direct successor to the Rift S, unfortunately it doesn't look like one. In reaction to the news that Facebook was going from the Rift S, Palmer Luckey, who left Facebook in 2017, he said on Twitter that a Rift 2 project was "canceled shortly before going into production and then canceled again in favor of a Lenovo downgrade with a much lower specification."
It is the end of an age, in a sense. The Rift S replaced the original Rift, which played a major role in popularizing virtual reality after a hugely successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter; attracted nearly $ 2.5 million in pledges in 2012, making it the most funded project of the time. A couple of years later, Facebook bought Oculus for $ 2 billion.
What does the future of RV hold for us? That's a good question. Andrew Bosworth, vice president of Facebook Reality Labs, said a few months ago that right now, a Quest 3 is not in development. It may materialize at some point, but not before a Quest Pro, which in itself is "a little far."
"For those who are curious, Quest 2 will be on the market for a while, for a long time, and will be, you know, I think the best bet for the most accessible way to enter virtual reality and have great experience" , said Bosworth.
Here's the thing: The Rift S is retired and the Quest 2 will bring the VR headset torch to Oculus for the foreseeable future.
