John Carmack is as notable as video game developers get: he co-founded Id Software and led the programming of innovative 3D Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake games. He is also a literal rocket scientist. Carmack founded Armadillo Aerospace in 2000 to compete for the Ansari X Award, which offered $ 10 million to the first non-governmental organization that could launch a reusable manned spacecraft twice in a two-week stretch. He did not win – a company funded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen claimed the award in 2004 – and in 2013, Carmack effectively resigned.

Elon Musk is also well known in video game circles. He’s a big fan of God Ex, it was speculated that his silly truck would appear in Cyberpunk 2077 (he didn’t) and he helped raise the price of GameStop shares earlier this year when he tweeted at respect amid the outbreak of WallStreetBets. He also participated in an awkward interview with Todd Howard in 2019, in which Howard said he paid a visit to SpaceX headquarters to help bring “authenticity” to Bethesda’s nearby Starfield.
