Mafia: Definitive Edition worked hard to update the aging crime story of 2002. But what it didn’t do, and perhaps should have done, was add a fully realized model of HM. Titanic for Tommy Angelo to explore.
Seen by Eurogamer Earlier today, modder Robin Bongaarts has been working continuously since 2006. Starting with the humble goal of adding the ship as a 3D model to the mafia world, discovering better modeling tools like Sketchup and Cinema4D forced Bongaarts to model the Titanic in its entirety.
"Just before this modification began, there was no Titanic game that allowed you to ride freely on the ship," Bongaarts told Eurogamer. "Sure, there were Ship Simulators and Adventure Out of Time, but they all had their limitations one way or another."
"When I found out about the 'moddability' of the mob, I thought it would be a good place to try to make my own virtual Titanic. Engines like Unreal Engine and Unity were much less accessible to fans of the time like they are now. So using an existing game like Mafia would make the whole thing a lot easier, as you would just have to model the ship and throw it there. How hard can it really be? "
Although Bongaarts hoped for the first time that the modification would take "about 3 months", the scope of the project has been its improvement. There is now a basic team of modders alongside dozens of volunteers, who exploit the boat while adding new features such as swimming and climbing to help you get around. According to one May image update, the team has already brought a considerable portion of the ship's passenger decks into play.
In addition to giving mobsters a new environment to explore, Bongaarts has also written a new story that will take the Titanic from its departure to its eventual sinking, trapped inside the rapidly sinking ship. All this seems very early in production, we think, with the mods first release it plans to simply give you day / night options to explore both the boat and the docks.
The first part of the modification was to be launched at the end of this month, although the delays and tests have pushed it back a bit. You can follow the progress of the modification and see more obsessively detailed screenshots of the ship ModDB.
