It’s hard to believe, but Max Payne, the neo-black shooter who gave us bullet time, a crazy dialogue above the top and one of the most famous enduring frunzits in all video games, he is now 20 years old. To celebrate the big anniversary, Remedy's creative director, Sam Lake, and Max Payne's voice actor, James McCaffrey, came together to show that the tragic, gray detective still has it.

Lake was Max Payne’s writer, but he’s also famous for providing the character’s glued grimace, a face that was probably intended for rage, but ended up in a place closer to finding something nasty at the bottom of the shoe. The look changed for Max Payne's biggest budget 2: The Fall of Max Payne, but Lake's cup has persisted as a sort of "Max Classic" immediately recognizable. McCaffrey’s voice is equally identified with the character, though, a trivial fun here, Max Payne 3 wasn’t originally included because Rockstar wanted someone to sound older and further damaged by his adoption of a Max. Luckily, that decision was eventually overturned (and rightly so).

And from that wonderful association of writer and actor, we got gems like this:

▪️ After Y2K, the end of the world had become a cliché. But who was I to speak of, a lonely wacky avalanche against an evil empire, to correct a grave injustice? Everything was subjective. There were only personal apocalypse. Nothing is a cliché when it happens to you.

▪️ There was no glory in that. I hadn’t asked for that shit. The problems had come to me, in great dark swarms. The good and the just were like gold dust in this city. I had no illusions. I wasn't one of them. I was no hero. Just me and the gun and the cheater. My options had dwindled to a singular course.

▪️ It was not about your intelligence or your good quality. It was chaos and luck, and anyone who thought differently was a fool.

▪️ Gognitti ran out of steam in a dead end valley. with steam boiling through the sewers, as if all the fires of hell were burning beneath us. It was shakedown time.

▪️ The collection of evidence had aged a few hundred bullets.

▪️ There were no minotaurs hidden in this maze, but somewhere out there, on the deck of their freighter, was waiting for the Charon’s skipper, like the Styx River ferry.

▪️ I had a bullet with the name Nicole Horne. He had ten thousand bullets with the name of the beard. It had high-tech security systems, enough mercenaries and weapons to start World War III. There was no fear.

▪️ Your rights will be read at your funeral.

Man, I love Max Payne.

I've said it before (recently, in fact) that, while not living up to expectations, Max Payne 3 is a worthy addition to the series (and a source of excellent quotes for itself: "He had killed more cops than cholesterol and still had no trace of Becker. It wasn't the first time it seemed to me, I probably should have gone over the plan in more detail, but now it was too late.") and for anyone looking for a place to jump, this is probably the starting point these days.

But, as Andy Kelly said in his 20-year retrospective, the original is still a masterpiece of action: "Time has not faded the sense of humor in the game, the game. # 39; attention to detail and the glorious cinematic battle ".

Happy birthday, Max!
