Microsoft has confirmed today that the new Windows 11 operating system will be available as a free upgrade for existing licensed Windows 10 users. This means that if you have an activated version of Microsoft's current day operating system and a PC that can handle it, you're already in line to get the new version. The release date of Windows 11 will be in time for the holidays.
Here is the official line from the Microsoft website:
"Windows 11 will be available through a free upgrade for eligible Windows 10 computers and for new computers starting this holiday season. To check if your current Windows 10 PC is eligible for the free upgrade to Windows 11 , visit Windows.com a download the PC Health Check application. We’re also working with our retail partners to make sure the Windows 10 computers you buy today are ready for the upgrade to Windows 11. The free upgrade will begin rolling out to eligible Windows 10 computers this holiday season. will continue until 2022 ".
We don't know how long this grace period will last, so there's no guarantee that you can get a free upgrade indefinitely. But at least Microsoft has said it will continue until 2022.
To address these concerns, you could always upgrade from day one, but in general our advice would be to give any new operating system some free time before engaging your full-time gaming PC with the vagaries of the new software.
Windows 10 hasn't been without its share of bugs that break the system and even games even in small upgrade versions, so something as big as a completely new version of the OS has a few more points. potential error. That said, we're pretty sure that Windows 11 started life as a major upgrade to Windows 10, and that this close relationship will help Microsoft avoid the worst excesses of bug release software.
The downside to this is that, aside from the shiny new UI, Windows 11 looks a lot like the Sun Valley Windows 10 upgrade we thought it would be. And that takes a bit of the shine out of publishing something that claims to be a whole new version of the Windows operating system.
However, with Microsoft essentially giving it to existing users, this will reduce some of the pain.
