The latest remake of Myst will be released this month, a game that has already been updated as Myst: Masterpiece Edition (1999) and realMyst: Masterpiece Edition (2014). Just called Myst, the latest version has been reinvented by Cyan, whose studio was originally named in 1993, for virtual reality screens and flat screens.

It adds "new art, new sound, reimagined interactions, and even optional puzzle randomization," as well as in-game photo captures and graphics options, including ray tracing. While you can play it on a regular monitor, the RV version will have free teleportation and roaming motion, and options for smooth or fast turning, fast climbing stairs and ladders, and supports multiple headphones: Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Rift S and Quest using Oculus Link.

Thanks to its availability on Mac and release at the beginning of the CD-ROM era, the original Myst had unbridled success and was the best-selling PC game until the Sims left it behind. However, it is not universally loved thanks to some illogical puzzles and a static world of linked images that you click to move. As Richard Cobbett put it, "Myst reinforced the toxic idea that adventures were about puzzle and boredom rather than adventure and fun."

Myst will be available from Steam, GOG, el Epic games store, Oculus, Game Pass and Mac on August 26th.
