Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker is doing something pretty unheard of in the MMO genre: it’s ending the story. Since its release in 2010 (and later referred to the much improved A Realm Reborn in 2013), Final Fantasy 14 has been slowly building towards a planet-sized confrontation between the Warriors of Light (players) and the tricky one, but … mostly evil ascians, or what's left of it, anyway.
The history of previous expansions has typically been overflowing with post-release updates that are released every few months after the release of this expansion. But not Endwalker. Everything will be resolved during the main campaign of the story, and its post-release updates will focus on a new arc of the story. Everyone guesses it will happen and I couldn't resist the urge to ask the game's director, Naoki Yoshida.
"With the history of ten years and more, we were able to tie a lot of loose points and, with the climax, there will be more questions that will be answered and people will understand the reasoning behind many things that have been present throughout history." Yoshida told me. "That said, there are areas of the planet Hydaelyn where we haven't explored yet. There are continents that haven't been discovered yet, areas that haven't been explored yet. There are possibilities. And with the history of Shadowbringers , we have learned that the Crystal Tower acts as a portal not only to distant realms, including the former and those that have been divided by the Sundered, but it can also allow us to travel in time as well to be able to return to the past and future as well. So there are still a lot of possibilities. "
It’s a vague joke, but as someone who has been playing FF14 for the past 11 years, I find these possibilities fascinating, especially the idea that time travels to a different era in Eorzea’s history. I could be on the table.
Because Endwalker’s story is largely about an impending apocalypse, I was curious as to whether the climax would lead to something changing the world. When the original version of Final Fantasy 14 was first disconnected, for example, Square Enix wrote it in the story that the old world was destroyed by a giant dragon wrapped in a moon; version. This will not happen again, Yoshida says. "You wouldn't see a case of everyone having amnesia right after Endwalker or the meteor – Dalamud – coming down once again and the kingdom being destroyed again. We won't have these incidents again, rest assured."
“We don’t intend to deny everything that has happened (in history),” Yoshida added. "We don't want to deny the adventure you've had, the characters you've met along the way and the successes you've achieved along the way. So when we're looking at this transition and moving forward to the next chapter of this history, it’s safe to assume that this still takes place in the universe itself so to speak. ”

It’s exciting that Final Fantasy 14 is on the brink of such a major transition, not only because I’m eager to see how it all ends, but also to discover the new story Square Enix wants to tell. But due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Endwalker will also launch a few months late on November 23rd. This is a pretty long gap that players will have to wait for, especially since the last of the patches in Shadowbringer’s story landed this week. To help pass the time, Yoshida strongly recommends reproducing some of the main stories from all previous expansions and A Realm Reborn.
“We have a newgame-plus mode,” Yoshida says. "So you can go back and play the chapters from the previous expansions and the main story, so you stay cool when you remember Endwalker. I think that will help you enjoy it."
"By now I'm sure you know characters like Lahabrea and Elidibus, but they've been around for a long time," Yoshida added. "Some of the dialogues they said could have a different meaning after experiencing what you know about Shadowbringers and going back and revisiting the previous parts of the story. Perhaps another key thing to keep in mind is when Hydaelyn he calls you and as he has called you many times. Also in the job missions, some people may have missed them, but there will be many characters who will make their appearance (in Endwalker) and that can be a good place to look at from an experience of history too ".
Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker is released on November 23, 2021. However, preorders can jump a few days earlier.
