District 9 director Neill Blomkamp loves the games so much that he is currently involved in creating one, but is far from his first commitment to the industry. Conviction, previously directed by Blomkamp, a short film for EA's Disappeared Mood, and was also intended to direct the Halo film that was screened before ever seeing the light of day.
Blomkamp has been involved in a dry run in Halo live action in the past, working with Bungie, as well as the effects companies WETA Digital and Origami Digital, in several shorts from the Halo 3 era. well, and they come together as a seven-minute version called Halo Landfall. One of the reasons they hold up so well is that the prop is amazing and not only looks important, but it involved some serious machinery: a part of which took a big chunk out of Blomkamp's ear. .

"I loved shooting [the Halo shorts]" Blomkamp told Game Informer. "I had something to do with Bungie that I made this video way back when Bungie was involved in the movie and games, and you know what? I think I'm the only person who can say that, I honestly think which is true, I 'm the only person who has bled real blood on a Halo Warthog while I was in some kind of fight. "
"I had to rebuild my right ear with a plastic surgery prosthesis, it completely destroyed my right ear by making these shorts. I was physically in the Warthog. There was the weapon behind the mount, that was locked in place.Because the pin was unlocked, you can turn it on your head.I remember it was locked because we had trick drivers driving it and I was tied to the back with a camera. And the director of photography was tied to the other next to his own camera and we were filming pieces of this short film.
"Then the trick driver hit a bump at high speed and threw us both out of the back of the Warthog. Depending on how we hit him, they threw me straight into the gun. So so the rotating weapon locking solid steel gears, note that they take a piece out of my ear.So the doctor on the set had to take me out, we just fired and I had to have plastic surgery that night. "
I have to say, the plastic surgeon did a great job, as I’ve been looking at photos of Neill Blomkamp’s right ear for a few minutes now and it looks pretty good.
Blomkamp's great Halo movie, unfortunately, will never happen, but there is a live Halo action show scheduled to premiere in early 2022 on Paramount +. It will be a new story rather than a direct adaptation of any of the games or novels, although in 2018 Showtime programming president Gary Levine described it as "incredibly respectful of the canon".
