Nvidia's mining limiter hacked: LHR GPUs are now 70% effective

Gpu power on the ethereum network has dropped 19% in just one month

The latest version of the popular Etherum mining tool, NBMiner, has managed to hack Nvidia's mining limiter so that it is not as effective as before (via Videocardz). Nvidia's Lite Hash Rate (LHR) GPUs originally halved the hash rate of graphics cards, NBMiner reaches up to 70% of performance, although the tool's developers recommend limiting it to 68% for reasons of stability.

The mining tool works with the latest Nvidia drivers and on Windows and Linux, although it currently only supports the ethash algorithm. Other algorithms may be supported in future upgrades, and it is generally expected that even higher performance can be obtained from these Ampere LHR graphics cards.

This is not good news for anyone who wants to grab a 30 series graphics card to play. Because more affordable cards like the RTX 3060 and 3060 Ti will suddenly seem like good deals for Ethereum miners. And more miners taking cards means there is less stock for what those cards are designed for, that is, playing.

It’s also frustrating, as we were beginning to hope that the value levels of the graphics cards would return to normal. There was even some hope that we would also see reasonable prices in the not too distant future. Well, at least get close to the PVPs anyway.

Thank you, Ethereum, for dodging our hopes again.

Russian hardware site, overclockers.ru, has already seen the impact that the NBMiner update has had on the market, as RTX 3060 graphics cards disappear from stores and other cards increase in price.

While this is bad news in the short term, Ethereum itself could jump to the rescue as it moves from a work test (PoW) model to a participation test (PoS), which puts an end to GPU mining for cryptocurrency. This change is not expected to occur until the end of the year at the earliest and most likely by early 2022.
