Update: In response to a query about Skateboarding possibly with a futuristic setting, an EA spokesperson replied, "I can share this skateboard. It is still in the early stages of development and as such is too early to confirm any specific features."
How promised, something related to the next EA Skate restart released today, but it’s pretty thin: it’s really just a guarantee that the game is still in development and that several early players have seen it and think it’s great. Sure, it’s direct marketing, but there are some clues as to what’s to come.
The short video includes many motion capture images, as well as several talking heads who are excited about the game. Some of his comments are interesting: one talks about his open world (no surprise, Skate 3 was an open world, albeit broken to pieces), and another says that "playing with all the homies will be so sick," which implies that online multiplayer is in: something else that seemed inevitable, though it’s good to be confirmed.
But one comment in particular suggests something extremely unexpected that we didn’t know or suspected before: that the game will be set in the future. Right 0:52 in the video above: someone shouts, "You're in the future," which another surprised player replies by saying, "wait, the game is?" It could be a complete misinterpretation, or just a clumsy edit, but it seems possible, especially if you watch the video with subtitles enabled. We have contacted EA and will update if they respond.
Oh, and it looks like you’ll be able to climb, which makes a lot of sense considering everything crazy measures players went to Skate 3 to get places out of the way.
Elsewhere, character customization is confirmed, though 2021 will likely be more detailed than what was offered on Skate 3 more than ten years ago. It seems that this game is a long time: the Skate launch date has not yet been debated, but I would bet it will be some time in 2023.
