Welcome to Somerville. You don't care about alien monsters or abandoned, bad cities. I’m sure we’ll have them tidy up when this atmospheric adventure falls in 2022.
Somerville is the first release from developer Jumpship, a studio started by Playdead founder Dino Patti. Cutting his teeth into already powerful vibrations like Inside and Limbo, Somerville announced his existence with a short joke that was, sorry my French, elegant as shit.
A new trailer, finally unveiled as part of tonight’s Xbox and Bethesda showcase, gave us our first proper look at Somerville — and heart, if not bloody. Somerville breathes in with the touch of Inside’s limited palette, an apocalyptic family journey through a moody but often shocking world.
Getting a fuller cast on Playdead’s wordless adventures also opens up a lot of space to explore the Playdead format, and it’ll be interesting to see where Patti strays from the trial and error platform of her old studio now that you have 5 bodies to protect. Still, Somerville looks incredibly promising, and yet if any harm comes to this dog, I’ll be the first to knock down the doors of Jumpship.
Somerville will be available on Xbox Game Pass on the first day, coming to PC and Xbox consoles in 2022.
