Tencent now has a majority stake in Yager, the Berlin-based studio best known for Spec Ops: The Line.
In February, the Chinese player had invested an undisclosed amount in the study, which Yager CEO Timo Ulmann said would "significantly improve the scope of our business, not just by accessing the network." and Tencent 's resources, but taking advantage of the industry' s vast knowledge of how Tencent owns ".
Now German place Wirtschaft Games has revealed that Tencent has acquired a majority stake, and Ulmann said the original cash injection was a way to test the waters between the two companies.
Yager has flown largely under the radar since Spec Ops: The Line in 2012. Although the game worked critically, he did not do any financial studies in the studio. The space shooter Dreadnought was launched in 2018, but the company fired a third of its staff after its release. In recent years he has been working on The Cycle, a real battle that tries to shake things up by throwing research into chaos, but there hasn’t been much news about it in a good couple of years. According to Games Wirtschaft, The Cycle is still in development along with another unannounced game.
It's another investment for Tencent, which seems to be slowly engulfing every corner of the gaming industry. It currently has more than 300 investments in technology and entertainment, with some pretty big names in the portfolio. Along with owning Riot Games, Tencent also has a fairly strong stake in Epic Games and smaller investments in Ubisoft and Activision Blizzard.
