The #ADayOffTwitch protest profoundly reduces Twitch’s vision

After months of "hate raids", streamers are planning #adayofftwitch

Today is #ADayOffTwitch Day, in protest of the platform's inability to deal with "hate raids," organized attacks in which channels belonging to marginalized Twitch streamers are flooded with abusive language and insults. . Contest entrants ask Twitch to take four specific steps to curb abuse:

  • Hold a roundtable with affected creators to help you create and implement more proactive and comprehensive toolkits to combat abuse on your streaming platform.
  • Proactive creative protection will be implemented immediately, allowing creators to select the age of the account of potential chatters and allow or deny incoming incursions.
  • Eliminate the ability to attach more than three Twitch accounts to an email address; currently, hate attackers can use an email account to register unlimited addresses.
  • Provide transparency about the actions being taken to protect creators, the timeline for implementing these tools, and the involvement of the Twitch Council Advisory Council.

Twitch is still very active today despite the protest, but the action seems to have an impact. According to TwitchTracker, today 's simultaneous viewing reached 3.5 million at approximately 4 pm today, a drop of one million concurrent viewers from the previous day. In fact, it was the only day last week that could not exceed 4 million simultaneous viewers at some point. The graph only goes back to the week, but the figure is undeniably lower than the figures seen in the year-round simultaneous viewer graph at the bottom of the page.

Part of this success is probably due to the participation of streamers such as Kaceytron i HasanAbi, which have more than 2 million followers among them. Both expressed support for the effort and it has not been passed on today. RekItRaven, who rolled the ball with the hashtag #TwitchDoBetter, said on Twitter that the day feels "cathartic."
