HACK * MATCH, the piracy minigame of the 2018 Zachtronics hack Exapunks, can now be played on any old, dusty NES you have ready, although an emulator will work just as well.
Exapunks, a traditional Zach-type programmer puzzle game, is a macabre 90s-style hacking about creating viruses and solving the man. To really sell the period, Zachtronics thought it would be great to create a cartridge-based port for one of the Exapunks minigames, although it turns out that building an NES game from scratch takes time.
"Shortly after the release of Exapunks in 2018, we started working on a NES port for HACK * MATCH, the game's action puzzle minigame," Zachtronics writes in Itch. "Little did we realize it would take us two years to complete and write our own C compiler for 6502. But now we're done and we want to share it with you!"
Nor is it the first time Zachtronics has launched its games on obsolete hardware. The Shenzhen I / O solitaire minigame previously came to MS-DOS and even reached the floppy if you so desired. The study pop-up store similarly, it also has some HACK * MATCH NES cartridges, and the download includes instructions for creating your own box and labels.
Of course, if you were a Sega kid, lost the NES, or have been a PC game purist all your life, you should also be able to load the HACK * MATCH ROMs into any NES emulator you choose. You can download the retro port for free later Itch.io.
