During Warframe’s TennoCon 2021 fan festival, Digital Extremes finally unveiled their next big expansion: The New War. Although first announced years ago, The New War was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, but it will finally arrive this year and, to prove it, Digital Extremes showed more than 30 minutes of gameplay from the new mission. It looks amazing.
Note: We will update this article with the 30-minute game demo as soon as it is available. For now, you can watch it on the Twitch VOD embedded above.
The New War is the next major film mission in the history of Warframe, and is also the largest mission Digital Extremes has ever created. If you are not trapped in the story, the essence is that the system of origin (which contains all the worlds that players explore) is being invaded by an unstoppable army of machines called Sentients that has the will to eradicate all life. . The search takes place on Earth, where the human colony of Cetus has been decimated by a Sentient invasion.
The gameplay demonstration begins with an extensive scene of Cetus being destroyed by the Sentients, as a human child comes face to face with one of the terrifying robots.
One of the novelties of The New War is the ability to take control of other characters beyond the chosen war framework. In the demonstration, players quickly take on the role of a Grineer soldier fighting the Sentients in the open world zone of the Eidolon Plains. This is a pretty remarkable opening: it looks like a story-based shooter has been removed instead of a mission that is in a booty shooter in service.
Later, the player changes perspective again to control a Corpus engineer named Veso as he struggles to survive in orbit around Earth. Unlike Private Grineer, Veso has different abilities as a fellow Moa robot that can command to attack soldiers (since Veso appears to be quite weak in direct combat).
Later on, the demo makes us take control of Teshin, one of the biggest characters in Warframe’s previous historical missions. As a swordsman, he excels in close combat and has infiltrated a Sentient warship to allegedly deactivate it from within.
It’s pretty wild as far as The New War is concerned, though it’s not a sandbox open world area that has usually been TennoCon’s big revelation. On a previous board, a developer made fun of the script for a few hundred pages, but it’s still a little mind-boggling to think this is just a small taste of what’s to come.
We will update this story with more details as they become available.
