Final Fantasy I-III pixel art remasters are on Steam today and represent a major fix for Square Enix: the proper ports of classic games that have previously ended with ugly superior arts and other themes. Pixel art looks really good! These are the types of ports that Square Enix should have done years ago. Except, well, something really went wrong with the sources, which fans noticed immediately when the games were revealed last month.
Pixel art remasterers use a serif-free font, but the biggest sin here is how crushed is. It looks like someone accidentally set the letter spacing to -100, leaving vast gaps in the user interface and a rather difficult to read font. Fortunately, how Role play has discovered that there is an easy way to make the new Final Fantasy font look much better.
If you buy any of the new Final Fantasy remasters on Steam, go to the local game files and open the Final Fantasy_Data> StreamingAssets folder.
Now copy and duplicate the following files to a temporary folder:
- font_en.bundle, font_en.manifest
- font_ja.bundle, font_ja.manifest
By backing up these files, delete both "font_en" files from the StreamingAssets folder. Then rename font_ja.bundle to font_en.bundle and rename font_ja.manifest to font_en.manifest.
Finally, copy the old font_ja files to the folder so the game does not fit the missing files.
This change does not replace the entire English text with Japanese characters, as it seems; if you set the language to English, it will remain in English. What it does is apply a different format to the English text, making it look much broader and more readable.
RPGSite notes that this fix could cause the English text to overflow the user interface, as it has obviously been designed and tested for the smallest font, but they have not had any problems. Depending on how the user interface is designed, this may depend on the resolution at which you are playing. Still: definitely worth it.
Square Enix should do the right thing and add a pixel art font option to the game, as they update the recent Legend of Mana port with the original font this fall. But for now, that will do.
