Suddenly, the portal-inspired FPS Splitgate was scheduled to launch at 1.0 on July 27 after a couple of years on Early Access, but has been postponed until August. Not entirely bad news: The current open beta will continue, and the 1047 Games studio has received $ 10 million from a venture capital firm to expand its development team and help solve critical server issues.
While Splitgate struggled to maintain a viable player base after its initial Early Access release in 2019, there was a huge increase earlier this month when the beta was released and added cross-game compatibility with Xbox and PlayStation consoles. The increase was so great and so unexpected that the 1047 Games have struggled to keep the game live over the past week. It was like that briefly offline at the end of last week, and again today so that the studio could "focus on server optimizations to prepare for Tuesday," the 1.0 release date, which was previously planned.
“Our team has been impressed by the incredible reception the Splitgate community has shown us,” 1047 CEO Ian Proulx said in a statement. "With the abrupt and sudden rise of players trying to access the servers, we will have to solve a myriad of technical problems that lead to this crazy level of growth."
Proulx goes on to say that server capacity is the biggest challenge facing the game, but that the $ 10 million injection should go a long way to fixing things. “That’s why we’re thrilled that human capital is leading this last round of funding,” Proulx said. "In addition to providing the capital needed to increase server capacity and stability, they will help build the engineering team we need to create the best possible game for our players."
As of now, the beta has expanded and Slipgate will be back online sometime on Tuesday. Planned release content will be added, including three new maps and more customization options. Which begs the question: what does this delay really mean for players? Probably not much. You will still be able to play the game if you can get into it, and 1047 points out that it will give players more time to complete the beta battle pass. As for the new August version, no exact date has been specified.
