Golden Light was already one of my favorite games of 2020, a roguelike of horror in which shape-shifting meat monsters haunt you in a surreal and brutal universe. Learn more about the base game at my impressions from last year, but skimmed the Steam page too. Since then, it has received a lot of updates, with new biomes, NPCs, balance changes and even a cooperative mode. Neato.
But the real meat (sorry) of the latest update is Meat Royale, a 10-player spin on Golden Light's disorienting first-person combat. You and nine other players appear at a random level, including meat monsters, and you must do the actual battle, collecting equipment and weapons to take out the other players.
What happens is that the golden light is located in dark, winding, messy corridors where any object could be a monster. Some weapons are also "alive", with strange advantages and advantages that often require some kind of blood or gold sacrifice. And yes, as you may have noticed in the extremely good and weird trailer above, you can also eat some weapons. Real world logic doesn't apply to Golden Light and learning the rules is half the fun.
Also true to the spirit of Golden Light, you and the meat bros can change in the same way as the meat monsters, pressing down to take the shape of any cosmetic you are adorned with. Win matches to win Meat Crowns to spend on more cosmetics in the meat market. Turn your head into a gun, a computer or even a hand. Fortnite skins look pretty boring now, right?

You can see some of them in previous action, a disorienting and stressful game of cat and mouse. Battle Royale looks like a surprisingly good fit for Golden Light. The levels are so winding and messy that there are plenty of opportunities here for frantic chases, clever ambushes and close getaways.
The Meat Royale update also brings some improvements to the base game, including a new NPC Assistant, some graphics effects, and, wildly, a much higher 10-player co-op limit. Golden Light has a 25% discount to celebrate the big update too, so now is a good time to take a chance. $ 10 is a great thing for so much meat.
