This week we learned more about Icarus, as the survival game from DayZ creator Dean Hall and New Zealand developer RocketWerkz announced the release date of their first chapter and confirmed that it is no longer free to play.

And today on The PC Gaming Show a new Icarus trailer has appeared with a new compound bow and a very angry polar bear. See above.

The trailer begins at the space station orbiting the planet Icarus, with astronauts launching to the surface, making a base and then seeing it partially destroyed by a nasty storm and fire. The action then moves to the alpine biome ice cream to build a stronger stone base instead of wood.

I’ve played Icarus twice with Dean Hall. The first time we explored the forest biome (our base did not burn, although Hall itself caught fire). In my most recent session, Hall accompanied me to the alpine biome, which is much more inhospitable than the wooded areas where I spent more time in the survival game.

The alpine area is quite arid of trees to build it and makes them wear cold leather armor and collect bits of ice and melt it in the fire just to get some drinking water. It’s also home to polar bears and wolves, which I have to watch first fighting each other and then charging directly, as shown in the trailer. No wonder Hall (who has actually had real-life survival training) says that the alpine biome is his favorite area in the game, but after the polar bear constantly came down towards me while shooting him with panic arrows, I was definitely ready to head back to the safest forest area. In fact, I survived the attack, but barely.

And if the polar bears aren't big enough for you, RocketWerkz sent some screenshots of a creature not shown in the trailer. Hey, he's a damn mammoth:

Well, if bows and arrows can barely stop a worn polar bear, what will I need to get a mammoth out? Luckily, there's a Gatling gun somewhere in the tech tree. That and a very large barbecue. The first chapter of Icarus, called First Cohort, will have to come out on August 11th.
