The excitement of this weekend’s E3 2021 may have faded, but Microsoft didn’t get that note. Today, in a new "Xbox Showcase Extended" broadcast, the publisher delved into the most important upcoming games on its list, and no less important is Psychonauts 2.
Double Fine founder Tim Schafer guided us through a new in-depth look at the long-awaited sequel with new details on some levels we’ve seen in the past. The first is an initial level of the game, the mind of Dr. Caligosto Loboto, the villain of the first game that Raz was friends with at the time. Raz is going into his mind to extract information that is hidden there and will jump on many nasty-looking teeth to do so.
Schafer also touched another starting level in the mind of psychonaut director Hollis Forsythe. This level is understood as a tutorial (for both Raz and the player) for a new psychic power in the sequel called Mental Connection. Raz takes the experiment too far and begins to get wrapped up in Forsythe's memories by implanting a love affair with the game, Inception style.
The most exciting location for fans is probably Raz’s return to the Whispering Rock summer camp from the first game. Apparently, this is where Raz will have to come to terms with his own past, including his family’s water curse and his past with the Psychonauts agency.
All exciting things of which Schafer is certainly saying almost too many things! Lovely stories are part of what makes Double Fine games special, so I don’t want to be too familiar with the plot points of Psychonauts 2.
Psychonauts 2 finally premieres on August 25th.
